Type-c is just a shape of an interface, and its functions can be added or subtracted.
This depends on the manufacturer's wishes. Type-C can be made to only support USB data transmission, cannot be charged, and cannot be used for display; It can be made to only support DP display and data transmission, and cannot be charged.
The type-c interface has two types: female and male, with a total of 24 pins defined. This means that connecting 24 pairs of pins requires 24 cores, but not all scenarios require connecting 24 pins.
For manufacturers, not connecting so many cores reduces costs. They can customize fixed number of cores and type-c connectors, and there is no need to weld so many pins during welding. If each type-c line saves 1 yuan, then 10000 pieces is 10000 yuan. The factory's monthly shipment volume is definitely not in tens of thousands, but in millions, or even tens of millions.
In fact, even if the manufacturer does not want to save money, not all 24 pins need to be connected. For example, when connected simultaneously, D1+and D2+may have a short circuit, while D1- and D2- may have a short circuit. So only one pair of D+/D - will be left in the connecting cable of the type-c male, and there is only one CC pin on the male, and the other CC pin becomes VCONN.
When the USB 3.0 interface is not available, the D+/D-pin provides a signal channel for the USB 2.0 signal.
VBUS/GND can provide 100W power supply capacity for uplink data interfaces or support point-to-point power supply in certain scenarios. The remaining connection pins are all "asymmetric" connections, which means that if the wire sequence is reversed, it cannot function properly (asymmetric connections, please refer to the pictures of the female and male connectors).
Type-c is actually a native USB interface that does not distinguish between positive and negative aspects. In the past, there were many types of USB interfaces, which can be roughly divided into type-a and type-b. They all have a common characteristic: without exception, the interface is large and can be divided into positive and negative aspects. Conversely, it cannot be inserted, and blind checking is likely to affect bad sockets.
Of course, type-C is not only compact and can blind insert both sides, but more importantly, it is a versatile interface that supports higher transmission rates and stronger power supply capabilities. In addition, the type-c interface also supports bidirectional power supply, which can accept power from the charger and also act as the charger to output current externally.
The type-c interface, which integrates tens of thousands of functions, is currently not as beautiful. In the eyes of many people, the type-c interface is a universal interface that can be used for data transmission, converted into an RJ45 interface to connect to a wired network, can be used as a display interface based on the DP bus to connect to an external monitor, can be used to connect to a headphone speaker, can be used to connect to peripheral devices such as a mouse/keyboard, and can also be used to charge digital devices.
It's not easy for Type-C to have a unified USB interface, and you still have to buy Type-A's traditional interface to buy a USB drive, as traditional USB interfaces still dominate the majority. The development of the type-c interface is far from as fast as people imagine, except for the frequent use of mobile phone charging.
How many keyboards, mice, and monitors can be connected to the original ecosystem without using a type-c interface adapter? If a laptop has a full type-C interface, then it is necessary to use a type-C to type-A adapter, which simply does not highlight the advantages of the type-C interface. After using the adapter, it still appears somewhat cumbersome.
So computer manufacturers only use type-c interfaces on some "high-end, ultra-thin, and elegant" laptops, while other high-throughput products do not dare to venture into using type-c interfaces.
The castration of the type-C interface has resulted in not all type-C interfaces being integrated with multiple functions, which is also one of the reasons for the poor development of type-C. It is very likely that you can use this type-C data cable for fast charging while switching to another cable is not enough. For example, a type-C data cable can be used to connect to a monitor but switching to another cable is not enough.
All of the above will not affect the process of gradual development and acceptance of type-C in the future, and the entire industry chain is also slowly progressing. This process is not overnight. You cannot say that traditional USB devices used nowadays are all discarded and replaced, which is a bit unrealistic. However, there will be more and more type-C interface devices sooner or later because their advantages are overwhelming.
