USB type-C is being used globally for most of the latest smartphones and laptops, and it is being upgraded to provide up to 240W of power. This is 140% higher than the maximum 100W capacity available on existing USB type-c. Of course, manufacturers need to make some adjustments to their bundled USB type-c accessories to bring greater power. However, there will be no changes in the interface level. This means that you will continue to obtain the same reversible ports on the device, but with the ability to provide more power.
As initially reported by CNET, the USB Implementer Forum (USB-IF) is an industry organization that promotes and supports universal serial buses, commonly known as USB, and has released revised version 2.1 of the USB type-c specification. The new specification update has many similarities with the USB type-c2.0 released in 2019. However, the revised version mentions that a new option called Extended Power Range (EPR) will have a maximum voltage of up to 48V to provide 240W power at 5A
By carrying a capacity of 240W, the latest USB updates can help laptop manufacturers break away from traditional barrel connectors and provide modern USB type-c ports for charging and data transfer on their devices.
This will not bring any differences in the interface section, as consumers will be able to plug any USB type-c2.1 device into the USB type-c 2.0 port. However, USB-IF states that ERP compatible sources and receivers must be able to withstand potential arcing during pull-out events. EPR cables also require visual identification with ERP cable identification projects. This means there will be some potential changes and some visual adjustments to differentiate the new experience.
Most mainstream laptops now use the USB Power Delivery (PD) protocol, which provides up to 100W of power using a USB type-c interface. However, some game laptops and desktops require more output. This is where the new standards can come in handy.
