At present, we have introduced the latest trends in USB interface standards to everyone. At that time, we pointed out that due to various constraints such as power supply capacity, interface size, plugging experience, and transmission speed, the old-fashioned USB type-a square interface has gradually been phased out by the consumer electronics industry.
At that time, our main basis came from the latest version of the USB 4 industry standard, which had just entered the consumer market. With the birth of Intel's 11th generation Core, it also officially established USB type-c as the only interface shape standard. This also means that in the future, PC products will increasingly adopt USB 4 type-c as the only interface design, and the disappearance of the old USB interface on the PC end will inevitably strengthen the determination of smartphone products to switch to dual head type-c data cables and no longer be compatible with the old interface.
What we didn't expect after the publication of this article was that most readers' comments expressed no regret for the disappearance of the old interface. And it is widely believed that the comprehensive popularization of Type-C, which has a better plug-in experience and faster charging speed, in the mobile phone industry is a great thing.
It has to be said that for everyone's reaction, as a technology vertical media company, we are happy from the bottom of our hearts. Because this indicates that more consumers are actively pursuing new technologies and products, which will further promote industry progress and technological development.
But when we browsed through everyone's comments, we found a problem, which is that in the perception of many friends, the benefits of the USB type-c interface mainly lie in convenient insertion and removal, as well as the ability to achieve greater charging power. However, at the same time, there is little mention of another major advantage that USB type-C should have, which is its higher data transfer rate.
Why do mobile phone users, who have been using the type-C interface for a long time, rarely feel its speed advantage? To put it bluntly, this is because the vast majority of smartphones equipped with a USB type-C interface are essentially "castrated" versions of the interface, which can only support wired data transfer rates to USB 2.0.
So the question arises, why do smartphone manufacturers do this? Undeniably, cost savings are indeed one of the important reasons. But in addition, there are actually two important reasons that may not be well known.
The Samsung Galaxy Galaxy S5 was the first mobile phone to taste the USB 3.0 interface. There was no type-c at that time. First of all, there was an incompatibility "legacy problem" in some frequency bands of the USB 3.0 transmission specification and WiFi technology. In some early mobile phones, turning on high-speed transmission mode with wired interfaces (USB 3.0 mode) resulted in poor WiFi signal, and even WiFi in the 5GHz frequency band could not be connected at all. Obviously, WiFi is a more commonly used feature compared to USB wired transmission, so later mobile phone manufacturers had the motivation to voluntarily abandon USB 3.0 (or higher speed USB transmission standard) to ensure WiFi performance.
The ultra-high speed transmission above 10Gbps was the original intention behind the birth of Type-C. Secondly, it must be said that the USB standardization organization (USB-IF), the creator of the USB standard, played a very poor leading role in the entire commercial promotion process of USB Type-C. Because it was precisely they who "delegated" the type-c interface, which was originally only created for the USB 3.1 specification, to the specifications of USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, which is equivalent to actively cutting its technical specifications twice in order to promote the new interface. So as soon as the atmosphere opened up, it became difficult to correct it again.
Of course, some friends may say when they see this, that nowadays, phones don't connect to computers much anymore during normal use. If the USB interface speed is slower, it's better. It's really not possible. Isn't there still 5G and WiFi for wireless transmission?
To be honest, if this article was written two or three years ago, it is true that consumers "almost no longer have the need to connect their phones to computers through USB cables". Because at that time, game players no longer needed to transmit data packets to their devices through cables, and music enthusiasts had become accustomed to listening to music online. In addition, many mobile phone manufacturers had banned wired flash channels, and even those who love to toss and turn may not need to use their phones to connect to their computers for flash and backup operations as often as before.
However, time has changed. As time has come to the "5G era" in 2020, and "mobile VLOG" has become an important feature experience promoted by the entire industry, more and more models are supporting HDR video shooting with 4K or 8K ultra high-definition resolution, 120FPS or even 960FPS ultra high frame rate. Even many flagship phone users are starting to find that their phone storage space is not enough, Moreover, many times people may feel that relying solely on mobile phones cannot effectively complete video editing and publishing work. As a result, the huge files in mobile phones are transferred to computers, and instead become the latest and most urgent Functional requirement of a large number of mobile phone enthusiasts, geek players, and video creators.
In other words, at least for those phones that focus on imaging capabilities, equipped with a "real value" type-c interface with USB 3.1 (10Gbps), USB 3.2 (20Gbps), or even USB 4 (40Gbps) ultra high speed becomes really necessary. You should know that whether it's 5G or WiFi6, the current theoretical fastest bandwidth is only around 1Gbps, and in the face of true high-speed USB connections, it's still just a "little brother".
