Apple has always advocated for environmental protection, canceling the randomly included charging head and headphones during the iPhone 12 period, and also removing the plastic outer cover during the iPhone 13 period. But the iPhone 13 is not a free accessory, and its box also includes a USB type-c TO Lightning adapter. This is because Apple phones still use their own Lightning interface today, rather than the mainstream USB type-c interface.

The current EU proposal to unify the charging interface to USB type-c will obviously bring some trouble to Apple, as one of the important reasons why Apple insists on using the Lightning interface is that it supports the Apple MFi protocol, which includes an MFi chip in the data cable interface. Only data cables certified by Apple MFi can charge Apple phones. Apple charges certification fees from third-party data cable manufacturers through MFi certification, and can earn a large profit every year.

Simply put, if the price of a third-party USB type-c data cable is only 10 yuan, then a USB type-c TO Lightning data cable of the same quality may cost 30 yuan, and the additional cost is part of the Apple MFi certification fee. However, many Apple users are still willing to purchase third-party data cables, as on Apple's official website, a USB type-c TO Lightning data cable costs up to 145 yuan.

And USB type-C is a public charging protocol. If Apple changes the data cable to have USB type-C interfaces on both ends, it will no longer be able to use the MFi protocol. This way, any standard USB type-C data cable can charge Apple phones, and Apple will lose this profit.

But if the Apple iPhone also uses a USB type-c data cable, it will be of great help to the environmental protection industry, because this means that the Apple phone does not even need to come with a data cable, and users can charge the iPhone with any standard USB type-c data cable. Moreover, unlike domestic phones that use private fast charging protocols, Apple phones do not require high data cable requirements for the USB PD 20W charging power they use.

And we know that Apple is very focused on environmental protection, so I believe that for the purpose of protecting the environment, Apple will eventually compromise with the European Union and let iPhone phones use a unified USB type-C connector charging interface. Due to the USB type-c supporting higher charging power, in the future, iPhone using this interface may also support 50W or even 100W super fast charging like domestic phones, which is obviously a good thing for Apple phone users!
