There have been many rumors online about replacing the USB C interface on the iPhone, but the iPhone still uses the Lightning interface.
Recently, an engineer named Ken Pillonel successfully replaced the iPhone X with a USB C interface. According to the video content, the iPhone X with the USB C interface can not only charge normally, but also connect to the MacBook through a dual USB C interface data cable, achieving functions such as data synchronization and file transfer.
Perhaps everyone doesn't know the difficulty of replacing an interface alone. The interface is not just about unplugging the old one and installing a new one. There are actually 8 pins on Lightning that can work. To obtain all the functions, the new port must correspond to these pins one by one.
And what about the type-c interface? There are 24 pin designs for front and back, with 12 pins on each side. When transmitting data, there are high-speed four channels on both sides.
The great thing about this engineer is that he has Reverse engineering the Apple C94 connector so that the pins can be matched one by one. The initial prototype was a very large circuit board with an integrated type-c interface.
After CNC slotting, redesigning the interface, and reconnecting the ribbon cables to achieve "external simulation" of data and circuit connectivity, due to the type-c interface being slightly larger than the native Lightning of the iPhone, it had to remove the phone frame, use the machine tool again to expand the interface size through CNC, and then weld the type-c socket onto it.
For a long time, many users have hoped that the iPhone can switch to a USB C interface, which makes charging more convenient when using different devices. And Apple's iPad Pro, iPad Air, and other products have all been replaced with USB C interfaces.
In fact, for the unification of USB C interfaces for mobile devices, the European Commission released a legislative proposal in September this year, proposing to use the USB C interface as a universal charging interface for all electronic devices within the EU, and to sell chargers separately from electronic devices. According to the new law issued by the European Union, the large-scale use of the USB C interface on iPhones may also become a reality.
