As is well known, the three mainstream charging interfaces currently are Lightning, type-c, and micro-B. Lightning is a proprietary interface for Apple devices, and the applications of both are very extensive. Android manufacturers have mostly upgraded from Micro-B to type-c interfaces, while Apple insists on using the Lightning interface, as MFi certification for this interface is an industry chain that can generate huge value.
01. Why propose a unified type-c interface for mobile phones? The reason why the European Commission proposes a unified charging interface is very strong.
Except for mobile phones, tablets, headphones, portable speakers, video game consoles, and cameras, as long as they have the same interface, they can all use the same data cable for data transmission. At the same time, the fast charging speed has also been standardized, which means that devices that can charge quickly will charge at the same speed.
In this way, users can choose not to purchase chargers repeatedly when purchasing other devices, and achieve the three "unified" standards of unified charging ports, unified fast charging standards, and unified "environmental protection" without charging chargers. Through such operation, the purpose of reducing Electronic waste and low-carbon environmental protection can be achieved.
02. The advantages of unifying as a type-c interface are quite obvious. The biggest feature of the type-c double-sided pluggable interface is its support for double-sided insertion of the USB interface, officially solving the global problem of "USB always cannot be inserted", with both sides being inserted casually. The USB data cable used in conjunction with it must also be thinner and lighter. Because of this, Android phones have also moved towards a unified type-c interface early on.
In terms of data transmission, the advantages of type-c are also quite obvious, reaching 10Gbps. When used for charging, the type-c supports a maximum charging power of 100W, which can greatly improve the charging speed. At the same time, type-C also supports bidirectional charging, which not only allows you to charge your phone through the type-C data cable, but also allows you to charge other phones through the data cable. The best guess is that in the future, you can charge your phone, tablet, laptop, or even electric car with just one cable and one charger.
The type-c interface can be used for charging, data transmission, USB 3.0, video output, audio analog signal output, and audio digital signal output. That is to say, the type-C interface has many different standards, charging speeds, data/video functions, and exclusive tags such as lightning, and the performance differences between different type-C interfaces and data cables are enormous.
Some type-c interfaces only support data transmission, and we can understand it as a different version of USB-A, which is a beggar in the type-c interface family. Personally, some type-c belong to the "full function" type, which not only supports data transmission, DP video output and USB PD protocol charging functions, but also supports more luxurious Docking station devices. The fully functional type-c natively supports PD and can simultaneously connect monitors and multiple USB storage peripherals for simultaneous use, without consuming additional CPU resources.
If it is the Type-C interface on a mobile phone, only charging and data transmission are mandatory items of the Type-C interface, and other functions are optional. This is also the reason why the prices of data cables vary among different mobile phone brands. That is to say, even if it is a unified interface, you may still pay different prices for this interface.
03. Why are the voices opposing unified interfaces still strong? Since the EU proposed a proposal to unify mobile phone interfaces, Apple has consistently expressed disagreement. Nowadays, the USB-IF organization (the official promotion organization of USB) has also raised its own objections. Jeffrey L. Ravenclaft, the president of the association, recently published an article and wrote a four page PDF, expressing his opposition to the European Union's use of the usb c interface as a mobile phone process interface, believing that this would lead to operational and Function problem, and lead to confusion and controversy.
The USB-IF organization believes that the type-c interface is not the most advanced standard. Is this questioning one's own skills? In addition, they stated that forcing the use of a standard would lead to the decoupling of other types of USB interfaces from the ecosystem, which is not conducive to development. Therefore, the market should choose the type of USB interface, rather than forcing uniform implementation.
In addition, Apple's objections are consistent with the EU's unified reasons, both for environmental protection. The existing Lightning accessories are not compatible with the general standards, which will force people to throw away these accessories, which may produce Electronic waste. In addition, forcing chargers to be unified into one specification will hinder innovation and limit development. At first glance, it seems very reasonable.
