Next generation type-c data cable exposure, supporting 240W high-power fast charging

2021-12-04

The USB C interface has advantages such as forward and backward blind insertion, support for single interface input and output, up to 100W power transmission, and up to 40Gbps data transmission, and has been fully popularized on digital devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. But the speed of technological development far exceeds the establishment of standards, and the USB PD3.0 developed based on USB C has a power transmission limit of 20V5A 100W, which has become the biggest bottleneck hindering the continued upward development of USB C systems.

On May 25, 2021, the USB-IF Association released version v2.1 of the USB type-c cable and interface standard, which updated the chapter on power supply capacity. The USB PD3.1 specification categorizes the original USB PD3.0 content into the Standard Power Range (SPR), with a maximum power of 100W unchanged; At the same time, the Extended Power Range (EPR) has been added, expanding the maximum power from 100W to 240W.

According to data released by the USB-IF Association, three fixed voltage ranges of 28V, 36V, and 48V, as well as three adjustable voltage supplies (AVS), have been added to the extended power range EPR. The maximum current level remains unchanged at 5A; The power of 100-140W is 28V AVS, and the voltage range is 15V-28V; Above 140W to 180W, the power is 36V AVS, and the voltage range is 15V-36V; Greater than 180W to 240W is a 48V AVS, with a voltage range of 15V-48V.

Under the USB PD3.1 standard, USB type-c cables are divided into two specifications: 20V grade regular cables and 50V grade EPR cables. Power output exceeding 100W not only requires the use of EPR (Extended Power) 5A cables, but also requires EPR specific information handshake between Source, Sink, and Cable to enter EPR from SPR; If the cable is a Captive cable fixed to the charger, simply shake hands between Source and Sink.

Recently, Charging Head Network has received the Type-c2.1 data cable launched by DNS, providing early exposure of what new data cables will look like in the coming years.

From the appearance of the DNS type-c 2.1 data cable, the connector type is usb-c to usb-c, which is not much different from the common C2C data cable.

The terminal head is made of white plastic integrated injection molding, perfectly wrapping and protecting the internal chip. The tail of the network is extended to improve bending resistance. Most of the damaged areas of the data cables are at the outlet positions, and the hole treatment will not be too stiff.

The macro camera captures the interior of the USB C interface, and it can be seen that it adopts a full Pin pin design. Due to the high bandwidth requirements of the USB 4, it must be full Pin to meet the requirements, unlike low-speed cables where non full Pin can also be used.

In terms of cable sheath, the DNS type-c 2.1 data cable adopts nylon weaving technology, with intertwined weaving to protect the cable body from wear and tear, providing higher durability.

Through measurement, it can be seen that the end-to-end length of the data cable is 102cm, which is the most commonly used length in daily life.

By reading the cable E-Marker information through the USB tester, it can be seen that the solution is yichong (0x315c), and in terms of power transmission, it supports up to 50V5A EPR high current transmission with a USB 2.0 transmission rate.

Use the Apple 96W charger to connect to the DNS type-c 2.1 data cable and charge the Macbook Pro 2021. The power reaches 20.3V 4.57A 92.84W, reaching the maximum fast charging power limit.

Summary of charging head network: The DNS type-c 2.1 data cable terminal head adopts integral injection molding to protect the internal chip from damage. The terminal head and tail are elongated, and the connector is designed with full pin. The cable body adopts nylon weaving technology, which is commendable overall. The biggest feature is its support for the new version of type-c 2.1, which can transmit power to devices with power exceeding 100W under the PD3.1 fast charging standard.

Currently, Apple's Macbook Pro 2021 adopts the PD3.1 fast charging standard, with a 28V5A power transmission limit of up to 140W. The new version of PD3.1 can reach a maximum power of 280W and requires the use of new cables to transmit power at full power. The DNS type-c 2.1 data cable showcases the future of USB c cables, allowing PD fast charging to be used and popularized on more high-power devices.
